Terracon Stage 1 Reports Available

Georgia Power partners with state and local communities to make the site selection process as efficient and customer-focused as possible. One resource we use to help decide if a site is suited for a specific business is a subscription to Terracon and Stage 1 Reports. Providing as much information as possible early on can eliminate a site or move it to the top of the list – speeding up the process for all parties involved in the location decision.

Our team of engineers and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) specialists are responsible for understanding what makes a site the best one for a business. To that end, we have been digging into our agreement with Terracon to provide site selectors and communities with Terracon Stage 1 Reports.

What is a Terracon report?

The Terracon Stage 1 Reports leverage the accumulated history of geotechnical knowledge collected by Terracon throughout Georgia. They provide a “preliminary high-level analysis” of the geotechnical and sub-surface conditions that one may expect to find at a given site. The report also dives into other publicly available sources of data to inform the prospect or owner about the potential presence of Cultural Resources, Wetlands, Flood Zones, Streams, and Federally Protected Species. It does all this in an abbreviated format that is easy to read compared to a highly technical typical engineering report.

The Terracon Stage 1 Report guides communities or prospects on the next steps a prospect can take to move forward with a given site, shortening the time to full operation. It can also provide insights a community can take to mitigate potential issues encountered by the prospect - that is, allowing the community to pre-emptively fix a problem prior to marketing the site.

If a Terracon Stage 1 Report has been completed for a community, it is accessible via a link on the property search tool, under the heading of Stage 1 Report. Additionally, a community may contact their Regional Community Development Manager and request their report (if available).

Community Spotlight – Great Practices in Workforce and Talent Development

Whitfield County is currently piloting a 10-day workforce training program called Project Purpose. This program was created for newly graduated high school students that do not have plans to attend post-secondary school following graduation. Project Purpose is coordinated by the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce, Believe Greater Dalton, and the Dalton-Whitfield County Joint Development Authority. This year, Project Purpose was sponsored by thirteen different companies, including Georgia Power.

Students received personal and professional development training, safety in the workplace and quality control training, financial literacy, and resume and interview preparation. Students took part in community and industry tours and will end the program by interviewing with a variety of manufacturing companies, and potentially receiving job offers that fit their skill set. This year, nine students began the program, and seven students are on track to complete the program.

The organizers asked us to give a special thank you to Bryan Griffin, Tamara Brock, and Jamal Jesse for their commitment to the program and educating the students about Georgia Power and safety in the workplace.
